Order Up!

A few weeks ago I saw these.

And then a week later Bakerella posted these. By then my love for mini hamburgers was official. How adorable are they?

While visiting my sister we decided this would be a good project for the boys to help us with. They are 3 and 4, so we opted to go the Nilla wafer route, because of durability. I could only imagine the crumby mess that would result after my helper had done his helping. We combined the best of both worlds, the cookie burgers with fries.

I ran to the store to pick up the Nilla wafers, and after much deliberation in the aisle, decided to go with the generic (for less than half the cost) instead of the real thing. When I opened the impostors up I was met with some very ugly cookies. But since we were in rural Idaho and the store isn't just around the corner, we dealt. And I think the results were great.

Bakerella was kind enough to include templates for all of her presentation goodies. We reduced them to half size, since our cookies are smaller than cupcakes (2 baskets or 6 fry holders per page). And they were perfect. I was skeptical of running tracing paper through the printer, but Bakerella knows what she is talking about. It was smooth and I am excited to try it for other projects. We printed the fry holders on card stock instead of vellum. No other changes were necessary.

We ended up using a friend's sugar wafer recipe, because they don't spread or move much when baking. Once again, we followed Bakerella's instructions. We also used this same dough for our buns. We cut out little circles and before baking sprinkled half with sesame seeds. If you want a browner look, you could always brush with an egg wash or butter, I suppose, to get more of that brown bun look. You will have plenty of dough for both fries and buns, so this works great. Or you can just buy some Nilla wafers, but remember to go with the real thing, I've warned you.

The hamburgers were (ugly) Nilla wafer crumbs mixed with melted chocolate, formed into patties and cooled. Colored frosting served as mustard and ketchup and our lettuce was green colored coconut.

Once all that work was done, we set the boys loose construcing hamburgers for their dads. They had so much fun.

The more ketchup and mustard the better I say. If they can do it, you can do it!

My little guy was so excited to get home to give his dad a hamburger and french fries..that are really cookies! I think a mini shake would complete the meal, what do you think?

Happy Father's Day!
